Finishing Options Overview

1. Natural Wood Wax

A simple and classic choice, natural wood wax enhances the grain and gives a lovely golden tone to your oak. It’s easy to apply with a cloth—just rub it gently into the wood along the grain and wipe off any excess. The wax penetrates the wood, creating a smooth, polished surface that feels warm and natural.

2. Osmo High Solid Wood Oil

This high-quality oil finish offers deeper protection and a satin, slightly glossy look. For best results, apply two to three coats, letting each dry to the touch before lightly sanding with very fine (320 grit) sandpaper to remove any dust or roughness. Osmo oil brings out a rich golden color while preserving the natural texture of the wood.

3. Finishing Oil

If you prefer a more matte finish, finishing oil is an excellent option. It darkens the oak slightly, providing a subtle, elegant look without the sheen of oil or wax. Like other finishes, apply carefully and avoid touching the surface until fully dry to prevent finger marks.

4. Water-Based Matte Varnish

For a more durable surface with a protective layer, a water-based matte varnish works well. It’s important to apply this in a well-ventilated space due to the strong smell. This finish offers a safe, hard-wearing surface while keeping a natural, matte appearance.

5. Boiled Linseed Oil

A traditional and natural finish, boiled linseed oil penetrates deeply and enriches the oak with a warm tone. Apply with a cloth, wipe off excess, and allow it to soak into the wood. This finish is straightforward and enhances the timber’s character.

Important Tips for Finishing Up Your Planks

  • Always sand your oak beforehand to a smooth finish for the best results.
  • Apply finishes in the direction of the wood grain to avoid streaks.
  • Avoid touching the surface with bare fingers while the finish is drying to prevent marks.
  • Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area, especially with varnishes and oils.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions on drying times and coats for a durable finish.

Finishing your oak plank is the final step to ensure your project looks great and stands the test of time. Whether you want a natural look or a hard protective surface, the right finish makes all the difference.
